In 2013, Mitsubishi’s flagship model, the Outlander, became the first vehicle in the segment to offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The 2023 version incorporates the next-generation PHEV system that gives it more range and power.

Now equipped with a 20 kWh battery, the 2023 Outlander provides an electric range of 61 km, an increase of 22 km over the previous model. The hybrid powertrain, consisting of a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors, produces 248 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. Power output has been upgraded to 114 horsepower up front and 134 in the rear.

Bold styling

With its bold styling, the Outlander doesn’t go unnoticed on the road. Its raised hood features a distinctive fascia with plenty of character. The frontal area is impressive with its oversized grille and dynamic chrome bumper that houses multiple LED headlights. The horizontal lines, which extend from the hood to the rear, combined with the floating roof, give it a sharp and elegant profile. With its new, more generous exterior proportions, the 2023 Outlander offers a more spacious cabin, providing greater headroom and legroom in the front and middle rows. Under the rear cargo area hides a third row. Although not easily accessible when deployed, and offering limited comfort and clearance, it can accommodate two additional passengers if needed.

Refined and user-friendly interior

The interior of this compact SUV is characterized by comfort, roominess and craftsmanship. The use of materials such as leather, aluminum, chrome, and black lacquered plastic gives the cockpit of the GT Premium S-AWD version tested a high-end touch. The positioning of the controls is intuitive and the 9-inch screen infotainment system is easy to use. The Outlander also incorporates a plethora of driver assistance technologies and active safety systems, including head-up display, 360o camera, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and emergency braking.

Flexible energy management

Based on the concept of an electric vehicle for daily commuting and a hybrid for longer journeys, the Outlander provides a lot of flexibility. It offers easy control over the use of electric power through four modes, NORMAL, EV, SAVE, or CHARGE, the latter allowing the battery to charge up by exploiting the internal combustion engine. The one-pedal mode also helps recover energy through regenerative braking.

Eligible for two government rebates adding up to a total of $10,000, the 2023 Outlander PHEV is positioned as an affordable SUV with a base price of $46,538. Versatile and environmentally friendly, the Outlander stands out with its original styling and extensive equipment offering, ensuring a comfortable and safe drive.
