NO LESS THAN FIFTY NEW EVs COMING SOON

By Piero Facchin

Today, the range of electric vehicles (EVs) available to Canadian buyers is growing rapidly. Traditional automakers, EV pioneers and start-ups are rolling out zero-emission vehicles in all categories: compacts, crossovers, performance cars, SUVs and pickup trucks. Some traditional automakers have pledged to go completely battery-electric in the years to come.

The current commercial impact of the coronavirus pandemic has slowed automotive development and production, but automakers’ plans to introduce EVs into their offerings continue unabated. In fact, dozens of pure electric models are expected to debut by the end of 2024.

And there will be a wider range of plug-in hybrid models, which will be able to run primarily on electric power for a while before a gasoline engine kicks in and makes the vehicle function more like a traditional hybrid.

The roll-out of new electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid models in different segments is good news for consumers looking for an alternative fuel vehicle to meet their needs. Hyundai, Kia, Jeep, Mini, Polestar, Tesla, Vinfast and Volkswagen all have new EV models coming to the Canadian market soon.

Here are just a few of the models coming soon.

BMW

BMW continues to expand, having started out years ago with the compact i3 and the elegant two-door i8. Just look for the “i” in front of the Bavarian brand’s model names..

CHEVROLET BLAZER

The Blazer EV is based on GM’s Ultium platform, which underpins the automaker’s latest electric models.

CHEVROLET EQUINOX

Chevrolet continues its electric product offensive with the Equinox EV. This small SUV will be offered in two configurations: front-wheel-drive versions have 210 hp with nearly 500 km of range, and all-wheel-drive versions have 290 hp with 450 km of range.

GMC SIERRA

Based on the GM Ultium platform shared with the Hummer EV, the Sierra EV will be launched as an innovative, high-end pickup truck with a six-figure price tag..

HONDA PROLOGUE

Honda will launch its all-new Prologue electric SUV in 2024, similar to the previously announced Acura ZDX. Co-developed with General Motors, the automaker presents it as an adventure-ready vehicle with a long 121.8-inch wheelbase and Passport-like dimensions.
