LINAMAR READY TO BUILD A GIGA PRESS PLANT

By Éric Descarries

All signs point to Canadian auto parts supplier Linamar being ready to begin construction of a new plant in the Welland area of Ontario “immediately”. The plant is expected to house three “Giga Presses” capable of producing very large structural parts for electric vehicles.

Initiated by Tesla, these “Giga Presses” can produce large structural components for vehicles, replacing the method of welding multiple parts into a single unit of aluminum. As a result, there should be three 6,100-ton high-pressure die-forging machines, a technology currently found only in Asia. This technology can produce large parts, but shipping them by sea would be prohibitive! So, the first of these “Giga Presses” would potentially be installed in January 2024.
