MERCEDES-BENZ: A DIESEL AND HYDROGEN UNIMOG PROTOTYPE

By Éric Descarries

The Mercedes-Benz division of German manufacturer Daimler has just presented a very original prototype of its Unimog utility truck. The truck, equipped with lawn mowers, is powered by a diesel engine, but its on-board mechanical equipment is powered by a Keyou hydrogen engine. The objective is to find out if the hydrogen engine is powerful enough to perform mechanical tasks, whereas elsewhere, attempts are made to entrust such tasks to electric units that would likely require too much space (including the batteries). In the case of the hydrogen solution mentioned herein, it is not fuel for fuel cells but fuel injected directly into the Keyou engine through Hoerbiger injectors. So there will be a specific hydrogen tank in this Unimog.
