HYUNDAI AND MICHELIN PARTNER TO DEVELOP NEXT-GENERATION ELECTRIC VEHICLE TIRES

On June 20, Hyundai Motor Group announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with tire giant Michelin to collaborate on the research and development of next-generation tire technologies optimized for premium electric vehicles (EVs). Over the next three years, the two companies will emphasize on developing environmentally friendly tires, significantly increasing the consumption of sustainable materials, which currently account for 20% of their total weight and improving tire performance. They also want to develop a real-time tire monitoring system that will help advance autonomous driving technology. The result of this collaboration will be used in the South Korean carmaker’s future premium electric models.

This is the second partnership between the two parties. The first agreement, which dates back to 2017, focused on the development of a proprietary tire for the IONIQ 5, technology exchanges, and conducting tire-related experiments and analysis methods.
