Joe Biden wants electric vehicles on the US fleet
Last Monday, President Joe Biden promised he would replace the U.S. government’s fleet of some 650,000 vehicles with electric models focusing, as promised, toward cleaner energy.
According to the President, the US federal government owns an incredibly huge fleet of vehicles that he wants to see replaced with clean electric vehicles made in America. Yet, it might cost the U.S. $20 billion or more to replace the fleet. As of 2019, the U.S. government has had some 645,000 vehicles that were driven 4.5 billion miles consuming more than 1,420 million litres of gasoline and diesel fuel.
It is reported that the U.S. government spent $4.4 billion on federal vehicle costs in 2019 only. As of July 2020, only 3,215 of those vehicles were electric. Incidentally, the US president also announced that 550,000 EV charging stations would be built in the country.
