ELECTRIC VEHICLES: PURCHASES ARE DECLINING
By Anne Bourgoin
Whereas a year ago, waiting lists for electric vehicles (EVs) could stretch up to two years, depending on the model, this year’s brands are struggling to find buyers. The very high price tag, it has to be said, is putting a damper on even the most motivated buyers. “People want an EV and know they can save money with one, except that interest rates are holding back purchases,” explained Simon-Pierre Rioux, founder and spokesman for the Association des véhicules électriques du Québec (AVEQ), to TVA.
And yet, according to Rioux, the average price of an EV is only $7,000 more than a gasoline-powered vehicle. Given the incentives in place, the electric model will cost less.
We’ll have to be patient when it comes to an affordable EV, since Honda and General Motors have put an end to their plans to collaborate on the development of more affordable EVs. This about-turn comes just one year after the two companies announced their plans.
