FORD REFOCUSES ITS ELECTRIC STRATEGY
Ford is changing its strategy, reducing its investment in 100 % electric vehicles by 25 %. Faced with high costs and unpredictable demand, the automaker is now focusing on hybrids and a modular EV platform developed by a team of former Tesla engineers. This new platform will underpin more affordable electric models, including a mid-size pickup under US$40,000 scheduled for 2027.
Ford postpones production of its electric full-size pickup for a second time this year, and shelves plans for a three-row electric SUV slated to be built at its Oakville, Ontario plant. The decision, which could cost up to US$1.9 billion, is aimed at ensuring the company’s long-term viability, by balancing the EV offering while strengthening the efficiency of its combustion-powered range. Despite these adjustments, Ford remains confident in the future of EVs, while adapting to an ever-changing market.
