PHEVS INCLUDED IN THE 2035 GASOLINE VEHICLE SALES BAN
By Éric Descarries
Submitted in 2020, Québec’s proposed regulation banning the sale of light-duty gasoline-powered vehicles is expected to be enacted soon. The most recent plan, unveiled in the Gazette Officielle du Québec, announces this law for 2035. This includes electric vehicles running in parallel with an internal combustion engine. This means that PHEVs (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles) will also be banned, making it the most stringent resolution in Canada. Note, however, that this proposed law is open to public consultation until August 25, 2024.
Hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine vehicles will still be permitted, since they emit no pollution. Used cars with gasoline engines built before 2035 will also be eligible for resale. Only replacement internal combustion engines, used to repair an older vehicle already in service, will be allowed to be sold by resellers, dealers or private individuals. Pre-2035 vehicles can still be imported. Finally, the law should only affect light vehicles.
