DAIMLER TRUCK: A SECOND LIFE FOR COMMERCIAL VEHICLE BATTERIES
By Anne Bourgoin
The American company is adopting a strategy to reduce its carbon footprint by optimizing the life of the batteries used in its electric vehicles and reducing material waste.
Thanks to cutting-edge technology, Daimler Truck North America is able to tell when a lithium-ion battery used in a vehicle no longer meets requirements. The battery is then repaired and refurbished. Its materials can also be reused or recycled.
Daimler Truck has teamed up with Nuvation Energy to create a battery energy storage system that enables batteries to be reused elsewhere than in a vehicle. A recycling process was also implemented with Li-Cycle, a leader in battery recovery. Critical end-of-life materials are recycled, enabling the company to achieve a 95% recovery rate of these materials, which are then returned to the supply chain, with minimal water discharges.
