GM RETURNS TO PLUG-IN HYBRIDS

By Éric Descarries

Following the example of many automakers, American giant General Motors seems to have ignored hybrid vehicle technology in favour of switching strictly to fully electric vehicles.

However, as demand for this type of vehicle seems to be slowing down, GM’s directors see themselves compelled to offer Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) again, especially in North America, over the next few months, to give the all-electric approach time to come back into the limelight. This was underlined by GM President Mary Barra in the company’s latest financial report, adding, however, that the automaker remains committed to completely eliminating all harmful emissions from GM light vehicles by 2035. But GM has not yet indicated which vehicles will adopt this technology and when they will be available on the market. Note that GM withdrew its Chevrolet Volt PHEV from the market several years ago.
