ONTARIO: FIRST HYDROGEN FILLING STATION

By Anne Bourgoin

A publicly accessible hydrogen filling station is to be installed at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. The station, which can fuel transport cars and trucks, is a first in Ontario. It joins a dozen other stations in Canada, including five in British Columbia. This initiative by the Greater Toronto Airport Authority and Carlsun Energy was supported by a $1 million investment from Natural Resources Canada. “Given that a significant portion of Canada’s emissions come from the transportation sector in Ontario, it is imperative that we begin to deploy hydrogen infrastructure in transportation corridors. We’re delighted to be working with Toronto Pearson and Natural Resources Canada to bring this vital project to fruition in such an important location,” says Jason Van Geel, President of Carlsun Energy.

Hydrogen fuel cells have faster refuelling times than electric cars and longer ranges. Automakers are exploring this avenue, such as Toyota with its Mirai and Hyundai with the Nexo SUV. Other manufacturers also have projects in the pipeline.
