It’s BMW’s turn to go electric
Of the 16 models German automaker BMW currently offers, only one, the small i3, is pure electric. That will change early next year with three new BMW all-electric i models: the i4 eDrive40, iX xDrive50, and the high performance i4 M50, all scheduled for availability March of 2022.
The i4 M50 has all-wheel drive with one electric motor at each axle. Normal drive configuration is via the rear-wheels, with the front motor kicking in when slippage is detected. The i4 is rear-drive only.
Range should be “up to” 480 km for the i4 eDrive40 and “up to” 385 km with the performance M50. For both the i4 eDrive40 and the i4 M50, the 82-kWh lithium-ion battery is bolted to the body structure forming an integral part of the architecture. The i4 has one motor at the back as the M50 has motors front and rear.
