STELLANTIS INVESTS IN SODIUM-ION BATTERIES

By Anne Bourgoin

Stellantis Venture, the venture capital fund of Stellantis N. V., becomes a strategic investor in Tiamat, a French company specializing in the development and commercialization of sodium-ion batteries. The company is one of eleven successful technology start-ups to receive the Stellantis Venture Award in 2023. It is the first in the world to have commercialized sodium-ion technology in an electrical product.

This technology, which contains no lithium or cobalt, is of interest to many automakers. It is inexpensive and could reduce the cost of cars. “Exploring new options for more sustainable and affordable batteries using widely available raw materials is a key element of our ambitions under the Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan, which will enable us to achieve a net zero carbon footprint by 2038,” said Ned Curic, Head of Engineering and Technology at Stellantis.
