Electric Mobility Canada supports the Federal Fall Economic Update measures that will help the transportation electrification industry

Electric Mobility Canada (EMC), the national voice of the electric mobility industry in Canada, welcomes the federal government’s 2022 Fall Economic Statement.

 

Among other measures, the government announced the launch of the Canada Growth Fund, which will help to attract billions of dollars in new private capital to create good-paying jobs and support economic transformation across Canada. It is a first step in in Canada’s response to the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) recently passed in the U.S.

 

“Our federal government has recognized the competitive challenges the IRA poses for Canada on the clean manufacturing front,” said Daniel Breton, President and CEO of Electric Mobility Canada. “The Canada Growth Fund will help ensure our country is not left behind and remains a  first-choice destination for businesses to invest and create jobs.”

 

Other proposed measures in the Fall Economic Statement include:

 

• A refundable tax credit equal to 30 per cent of the capital cost of investments in clean energy technology such as electricity storage systems including batteries; and industrial zero-emission vehicles and related charging or refueling equipment, such as hydrogen or electric heavy duty equipment used in mining or construction.

 

• $250 million over five years, starting in 2023-24 to help ensure Canadian workers can thrive in a changing global economy including:
  • A Sustainable Jobs Training Centre that would bring together workers, unions, employers, and training institutions across the country to examine the skills of the labour force today, forecast future skills requirements, and develop curriculum, micro-credentials, and on-site learning to help 15,000 workers upgrade or gain new skills for jobs in a low-carbon economy. The Centre would focus on specific areas in high demand, starting with the sustainable battery industry and low-carbon building and retrofits.
  • A new sustainable jobs stream under the Union Training and Innovation Program, which supports union-based apprenticeship training in the skilled trades. Funded projects through this stream would support unions in leading the development of green skills training for workers in the trades.
  • The Sustainable Jobs Secretariat: To effectively support workers on the road to sustainable, good-paying jobs to offer a one-stop shop for workers and employers. It will provide the most up to date information on federal programs, funding, and services across government departments as Canada works to build a low-carbon economy with opportunities for everyone.

 

• $962.2 million on a cash basis over eight years, starting in 2022-23 to modernize the National Research Council’s scientific infrastructure and help continue to propel Canadian innovation.

 

“The measures proposed today will support and attract EV-related business and investment in Canada, including assembly, parts, machinery, charging equipment, and battery materials extraction and processing,” Breton said. “The measures will also accelerate technologies, research, development and manufacturing associated with reducing EV-related costs.”

 

“The measures announced in the Fall Economic Update will provide support for training and retraining programs that will enable workers to make the transition to a decarbonized economy. That’s important because we need to build a labor force with the right skills. Engineering and research, electrical and mechanical, charging infrastructure installation, sales, maintenance, and fleet management skills will be critical to the success of Canada’s transition to a zero  carbon economy.”
