ONLY ELECTRIC FORD EXPLORERS AND LINCOLN AVIATORS TO ROLL OFF OAKVILLE PLANT LINES

Ford’s Oakville, Ontario-based assembly complex will build electric Ford Explorers and Lincoln Aviators, according to forecasting firm AutoForecast Solutions (AFS). The automaker had announced in the fall of 2020 a $1.8 billion investment to retool its plant as early as 2024. The initial goal was to manufacture five all-electric models there. The collective bargaining agreement signed between Unifor, the union that represents the workers, and Ford stated that the facility would be dedicated to producing EVs, without providing any further details about the quantity of models.

Sam Fiorani, vice president for global vehicle forecasting at AFS, believes the site could also make battery packs. A lower production volume than previously experienced at the plant would leave a gap, opening the door to battery pack manufacturing. Although the Ontario government said in 2020, when provincial funding for the retooling plan was announced that the Oakville project would include the installation of a battery pack production line, Ford’s CEO had referred to it more as a “possibility.”

The factory is now assembling the Lincoln Nautilus as well as the Ford Edge, with production expected to continue until early 2024.
