Amazon Cements Presence in EV World With Kia Home-Charger Partnership

You’ve taken the leap and bought a new electric car such as the 2019 Kia Niro EV. Time to enjoy the benefits of EV ownership right? Not so fast, you still have to decide on your home vehicle charging options including how to charge it quickly enough.

The 2019 Niro EVs arrive at US dealerships in April while the 2020 Soul EV is expected a couple of months later. Kia offers a big 64 kWh pack on both models that they say can charge to full in about 9.5 hours with one caveat: you have to use a Level 2 charger. If you’re using a 120-volt AC socket (i.e. regular wall plug) the reality is a little different: 59 hours to full charge according to Kia.

The selection of charging options and installation of charging hardware adds additional complexity and difficulty to EV ownership. Enter Amazon Home Services. Kia has partnered with Amazon and aims to make charger installation a simple click-through process.

Amazon.com has set up a dedicated page for Kia customers to see recommended Level 2 (240-volt) chargers for their vehicles. They can purchase a recommended home charger and schedule installation with a licensed electrician, via Amazon Home Services. This partnership is similar to the one in place for Audi customers.

Kia’s eligible vehicles with charging ports also include two plug-in hybrids, the Kia Niro PHEV and Kia Optima PHEV, along with the two fully electric models, the Kia Soul EV and Kia Niro EV.

No word on the rollout of the program to Canadian customers.
