SGL Carbon Designs Composite Battery Enclosures
SGL Carbon, a German graphite and composite material maker, is producing carbon-fibre battery enclosures. Examples of composite enclosures designed for Chinese car company NIO were on display at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show.
Demand for lightweight battery enclosures that meet specifications will grow rapidly as manufacturers attempt to make EVs lighter, according to SGL.
Carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP), the material showcased by SGL, has the potential to be 40% lighter than comparable aluminum and steel constructions. In addition, CFRP has approximately 200 times lower thermal conductivity compared to aluminum. Lower conductivity better prevents the transfer of heat and cold between the battery and the vehicle.
